The past week was full of firsts for me.
I made my first visit to Gastropod, the tiny restaurant inside the Epic Ales tasting room. Gastropod has an inventive menu with dishes like Hawaiian pizza okonomiyaki with carrot, cabbage, pineapple, lardons, and ketchup kewpie. Okonomiyaki is a savory Japanese pancake that contains pretty much whatever you want to put in it. Tofugu Japanese culture blog has a great post that fully explains okonomiyaki.
More firsts: I learned that lardons are small cubes of pork fat, and Kewpie is the most popular mayonnaise in Japan.
I also made a first trip to The Fat Hen. It’s a quaint eatery just a few doors down from Honoré Artisan Bakery and Delancey in Seattle’s Ballard neighborhood. (This may be the most delicious block in the city.) On the day that I went there for lunch, the special was eggs benedict with chanterelle mushrooms. I could not resist.
I’ve seen several variations on the traditional gingerbread man, but I saw this cookie kit for the first time at Walgreen’s.
