Apply Now to be a Guest on Season 2 of “Check, Please! Northwest”

Last year I had the great pleasure of being a guest on the inaugural season of “Check, Please! Northwest,” a Seattle restaurant review show. It’s produced by KCTS 9, Seattle’s PBS Station.

The show brings three strangers together to talk about their favorite restaurants. Each person recommends a restaurant, everyone goes to the three places, and then they discuss the food and their experiences.

KCTS is starting production of season 2 of the show, with episodes to air in spring of 2014. If you like to eat out, and you’re not shy about being on television, then I strongly recommend that you apply to be a guest on “Check, Please! Northwest.”

The KCTS staff will give you the star treatment, you’ll get a cool behind-the-scenes look at how a television show is made, and host Amy Pennington will make you belly laugh. (She may also give you some invaluable gardening tips if you ask nicely.)

Bakeman’s was one of the restaurants that we reviewed on my show.

The Day Oprah Talked to Me

The nice—and somewhat strange (but convenient)—thing about working at Starbucks corporate headquarters is that there is a Starbucks store inside Starbucks. This morning, I headed to the store to get a yogurt parfait and some juice.

Like most Starbucks, the Starbucks store inside Starbucks is usually very busy in the morning. But when I arrived, the line snaked down the hallway and groups of people were jammed in the seating area.

Then I remembered. Oprah was coming to visit.

The Agony and Ecstasy of Adobo

When I first heard about Adobofest, I instantly knew it was an event for me.

First, it’s a community block party in my beloved Beacon Hill neighborhood in Seattle. Second, it’s hosted by Geo and Sabzi of Blue Scholars, one of my favorite hip hop groups. And finally, this event is all about adobo, a dish near and dear to my heart.

Adobo is the one dish that every Filipino should know how to make. It can take many forms—saucy, succulent or crisp—but all involve the Filipino trinity of vinegar, soy sauce and garlic and is traditionally made with pork or chicken.

The other thing about Adobofest that excited me was the adobo cook-off. Anyone could enter their favorite adobo recipe and cook it for the judges and everyone else attending Adobofest. The winner would receive bragging rights, a trophy, $100 cash prize, and an invitation to have his or her adobo featured in the “Jose Rizal” sandwich at Beacon Ave Sandwiches.

I really wanted to enter a vegan and gluten-free adobo so that my friends—and others—who have these kinds of diets would be able to experience this quintessential Filipino dish.

I’ve made vegan adobo before, and while it tasted pretty good, it wasn’t competition grade. I tinkered with a few recipes, but with the contest deadline looming, I realized that none of my vegan adobos would withstand Filipino scrutiny (which can be TOUGH).

While I was disappointed not to enter, I look forward to tasting the other adobos (and refining my vegan and gluten-free adobo for next year). The top 3 vote-getting dishes chosen by the Adobofest audience will advance to a final round live-tasting where the winner will be chosen by a judges panel.

Adobofest is Sunday, August 18 at The Station coffee shop on Beacon Hill (16th Ave South, Seattle, Washington 98144) from 12-5pm. Prices are: $6 for 3 tastes and a drink, $10 for 5 tastings and a drink, or $25 for all you can eat and drink.

What’s On My Phone Wednesdays: A Whole Fish

I recently started a new job and went to a business dinner with my colleagues for the first time. We went to Mamnoon, an upscale restaurant serving modern takes on Middle Eastern cuisines. We ordered a several dishes to share. I was most excited about the samkeh harra, a whole roasted branzino.

When our server brought the fish to the table, I asked if anyone else wanted the head. My co-workers demurred and then looked on (possibly in horror) as I happily dismantled the fish head and ate it–including the fish eyes. (The best part!)

I’m sure it was not a pretty sight, and maybe I should have chosen something I could have consumed more elegantly, but that fish head was good! Cheek meat is some of the best on a fish.

The next night, I had dinner at the Thai-Laotian restaurant Viengthong. This time I was with friends, and we also ordered a whole fish. It was fried and topped with chilis. I think I may have had to fight my friend Mahnaz for the head.

A sandwich with THREE different kinds of pork–pulled pork, ham and bacon–topped with apple jalapeño slaw. It was appropriately named, “The Bad Lieutenant,” and it was my favorite dish at the Mobile Food Rodeo.

Beat the Lines at the Mobile Food Rodeo

I love many things about the multitude of food truck events that have become a regular part of Seattle’s culinary calendar. I love the laid back, family-friendly vibe. I love the thrill of discovering that perfect bite. I love how people turn out in a big way to support small business.

What I don’t love? The lines. The incredibly long, interminable, soul-crushing lines.

So it was an easy decision for me to buy a VIF ticket to Seattle’s biggest street food event, the Mobile Food Rodeo on May 5.

For just $25, I’ll get the chance to get in an hour early to the event and skip the lines with all-day priority line access.

For those who like swag, you can pay $45 to get the VIF treatment along with an urban picnic tote bag, a commemorative patch, a 2013 Fremont Outdoor Movie season pass for two, and a Mobile Food Rodeo T-shirt.

On Sunday, I’ll make a beeline to these three trucks making their big-time debut: Ezell’s Express, Barking Frog Mobile Kitchen and How Pickle Got Out of a Jam.

I’m also excited about the Taco Libre Taco Truck Showdown. My money will be on the barbecue pulled pork Indian taco from Off the Rez, with a possible upset by the Fish Basket’s crispy cod taco. Of course, you can’t count out Marination Mobile and its “Holy Mole!” taco.
