Raw, Vegan and Totally in Control: The For the Glow Spring Cleanse

I’ve always been somewhat skeptical of detox diets. Many of them seem to be based on dubious nutrition claims, and the people I know who’ve gone through these programs were never happy about it. Instead, they were irritable and depressed.

However, after 6 months away from the gym due to a knee injury and an indulgent vacation that included one too many piña coladas, the number on the scale was truly alarming. I weighed almost as much as I did when I was pregnant with my son 5 years ago.

So I started researching cleanses.

A special occasion: Eating at the Walrus and the Carpenter

My husband and I parked, and went into what we hoped was the entrance to the restaurant. There was no sign.

We uncertainly started to make our way down a dimly lit hallway when another couple came up behind us.

Uncertain that we were headed the right way, my husband asked them, “Do you know where you’re going?”

The woman laughed. “No,” she said. “We were just following you!”

I think I finally now how to cook!

Couscous with brown butter, garbanzo beans and mixed vegetables
I was spending a rare Sunday afternoon alone at home and trying to decide what to have for lunch. I hadn’t gone grocery shopping in awhile so there wasn’t much in the fridge, but I was too lazy to go out and eat.

I took another look in the fridge, and I saw that I had half an onion, a red bell pepper, part of a large zucchini, two carrots and some dill that was about to go bad. Then I remembered I had some couscous in my pantry.

I decided to sauté the vegetables and then serve them on a bed of couscous tossed with brown butter.

I almost always cook by recipe, but I’ve been trying to wean myself from constantly following directions and actually cook.

So that’s what I did.
